# Antihypertensives This class includes other classes: - [[Alpha-2 Receptor Agonist]] (Might also be same as [[Alpha-2 Adrenergic Agonist]]) - ==[[Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors]]== - ==[[Angiotensin-2 Receptor Blockers]]== - [[Beta Blockers]] - ==[[Calcium Channel Blocker]]== - [[Diuretics]] (==[[Thiazide Diuretics]]==) > [!INFO] ==Highlighted== are recommended classes for first-line treatment of [[hypertension]] There's also: - Central alpha-adrenoceptor agonists "Central alpha-adrenoceptor agonists (methyldopa, [[Clonidine]], guanabenz) decrease sympathetic outflow and renin and vasopressin secretion as well as increase parasympathetic activity." `https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2417048/#:~:text=Central%20alpha%2Dadrenoceptor%20agonists%20(methyldopa,are%20commonly%20employed%20as%20antihypertensives` ## Other Notes It works in the brain to change some of the nerve impulses. As a result, the blood vessels relax and blood passes through them more easily, which lowers blood pressure. When the blood pressure is lowered, the amount of blood and oxygen going to the heart is increased. https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/clonidine-oral-route/description/drg-20063252 ## Resources [[Resource Index|All Resources]] [National Library of Medicine](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK554579/) - good overview [Heart.org](https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/high-blood-pressure/changes-you-can-make-to-manage-high-blood-pressure/types-of-blood-pressure-medications#alpha%202) ```dataview LIST FROM [[]] WHERE !contains(fileClass, "Primary") and contains(file.folder,"Resources") Sort file.name ```
